सुरेन्द्र मोहन पाठक का जन्म 19 फ़रवरी 1940 को खेमकरण, अमृतसर, पंजाब में हुआ था। विज्ञान में स्नातक की उपाधि लेने के पश्चात इन्होने ने भारतीय दूरभाष उद्योग में नौकरी करने लगे। पढने के शौक़ीन आप बचपन से ही थे। आपने अपनी युवावस्था तक कई राष्ट्रीय और अंतराष्ट्रीय लेखकों को पढ़ा था। सन 1960 में, अपने कार्य-काल के दौरान ही सुरेन्द्र मोहन पाठक ने मात्र 20 वर्ष की उम्र में ही प्रसिद्द अंतराष्ट्रीय ख्यातिप्राप्त उपन्यासकार इयान फ्लेमिंग रचित जेम्स बांड के सीरीज और जेम्स हेडली चेज (James Hadley Chase) के उपन्यासों का अनुवाद करना प्रारंभ कर दिया। सुरेन्द्र मोहन पाठक के द्वारा अनुवादित उपन्यासों की मांग लगातार भारतीय हिंदी-भाषी बाजार में बढ़ने लगी।
सन 1959 में, आपकी अपनी कृति, प्रथम कहानी “57 साल पुराना आदमी” मनोहर कहानियां नामक पत्रिका में प्रकाशित हुई। सन 1969 आपका पहला पूर्ण उपन्यास “ऑपरेशन बुडापेस्ट” आया। “ऑपरेशन बुडापेस्ट” आपके द्वारा लिखी गयी 30 वीं कृति थी। आपका पहला उपन्यास “पुराने गुनाह नए गुनाहगार”, सन 1963 में “नीलम जासूस” नामक पत्रिका में छपा था। सन 1963 से सन 1969 तक विभिन्न पत्रिकाओं में आपके उपन्यास छपते रहे।
सुरेन्द्र मोहन पाठक का सबसे प्रसिद्द उपन्यास “असफल अभियान” और “खाली वार” था जिसने पाठक जी को प्रसिद्धि के सबसे ऊँचे शिखर पर पहुंचा दिया। इसके पश्चात आपने अभी तक पीछे मुड़ कर नहीं देखा है। "पैंसठ लाख की डकैती" नामक उपन्यास का अंग्रेजी में अनुवाद भी प्रकाशित हुआ तथा यह खबर टाईम मैगज़ीनमें भी प्रकाशित हुई थी। यह खबर भी आई थी कि इस उपन्यास की लगभग ढाई करोड़ प्रतियाँ बिकी थीं।
लगभग 300 उपन्यास लिखने वाले सुरेंद्र मोहन पाठक ने पल्प फिक्शन को एक नया आयाम देने का काम किया है। इंडियन टेलीफोन इंडस्ट्रीज़ की नौकरी करते हुए हिंदी पल्प फिक्शन की एक मजबूत धुरी बन जाना एक असाधारण बात थी। ऐसी सफलता रातोरात नहीं आती। इन्हें भी असफलताओं ने चुनौती दी लेकिन निरंतर संघर्ष करते हुए ये लोकप्रिय साहित्य के सिरमौर बने। न केवल अपने लिए एक बड़ा पाठक वर्ग तैयार किया, बल्कि हिंदी लोकवृत्त में पढ़ने की संस्कृति के बढ़ावे पर बात करते रहे।
