About the author Imtiaz Gul has written extensively on Islamist groups in Afghanistan and Pakistan for several Pakistani English-language newspapers and journals. He reported on Pakistan for the German radio/TV network, Deutsche Welle and for the German Press Agency, deutsche presse agentur until September 2006 and for CNN between 1998–2000. Gul appears regularly on Al-Jazeera and on Indian and Pakistani TV channels as an analyst on Afghanistan, Pakistan’s tribal areas and militancy issues. He is the author of The Unholy Nexus: Pak-Afghan Relations under the Taliban (2002), and edited Islam and Liberalism (2002). Imtiaz Gul currently heads the Centre for Research and Security Studies in Islamabad, Pakistan.
