Synopsis 'Ram-Ravan' Saga is an attempt to examine the tale of Lord Ram within the purview of human capability and to bring it out from the realm of the other-wordly and fantastic. The readers were introduced to various prominent characters and their origin in the first part of this series (the forefathers). The tale continues in 'Dashanan.' In commonly prevalent versions of the story Ravan's presence is usually seen after Ram's exile. We are generally ignorant of his personality and achievements before his appearance as a villain in 'Ram-Katha'. If some of it is referred to in later story then so much is the better otherwise we see Ravan only after his enmity with Ram is firmly and truly established. 'Dashanan' is this unknown history of Ravan. Ram is present in this episode and so are the other characters but they have very limited space. The reason being the chronological progression of the story, where without any doubt Ravan precedes Ram. The whole story of Ravan's ascent to prominence happened before Ram came into picture. The advent of Ram marks the starting of Ravan's decline. Therefore, this part has 'Dashanan' as the main protagonist. Next part of the series shall be devoted to Shri Ram. As the period between Ram's association with Maharshi Viswamitra to his altercation with Chandranakha (Shoorpnakha) marks a lull in Ravan's activities.
