SynopsisCraft Production and Trade in South Kanara: A.D. 1000-1763 is the revised version of the author's Ph. D. thesis. In this book an attempt has been made to nalyze the major economic activities in South Kanara during the specified period. In this book, the author has used various sources like archival records including English and Portuguese documents, indigenous recordcs such as kadatas and Tulu folklore including paddanas. This research work proves that the people of South Kanara showed keen interest in craft production, apart from agricultural production. Many craft production centres had emerged in the region during the period of study. Trade was another important occupation. Aspects such as fluctuations in trade due to emergence of political and social changes, contribution of traders to the society, items of trade, relationsjhip between agricultural producation and trade, and impact of European traders on the regional economy are delineated. This is an important contribution to the study of economic history of a South Indian region. This book is useful to the students of economic history of India.
