English Translation
J.N. Mohanty is one of the leading Indian scholars in the field of philosophy—both Indian and Western. This collection of contemporary essays presents Mohanty’s simple and direct treatment of some pertinent issues of modern philosophy.
The collection begins with an essay on philosophy and its role in today’s world in which Mohanty presents persuasive arguments for the increasing relevance of the discipline. He then goes on to explore spirituality, religiosity, the sacred, truth, and scientific objectivity. The rest of the essays deal directly with the concepts of self, selfhood, other, culture, and understanding.
These essays reveal a shift from an overemphasis on identity in classical metaphysical thinking, towards an emphasis on differences, without the uncertainties of postmodernism. Mohanty suggests ways to rethink the relation of the self to others as also of a culture to other cultures. The relation between theory and practice as that between fact and value are also thought anew and afresh.
