Poet-critic-translator-color director Vyomesh Shukla was born on June 25, 1980, in Banaras. His childhood was spent here and his studies were also done here. His writing journey began in 2004 with articles and responses focused on city life, past, geography and stories. In 2005, Wyomesh translated 'What I Heard About Iraq', a book by famous American journalist Elliot Weinberger, about the American atrocities in Iraq. Which was published in the form of a booklet by the prestigious Hindi magazine Pahal. This translation earned widespread popularity and appreciation for Vyomesh.

Vyomesh has translated the works of Noam Chomsky, Harvard Zin, Raymond Williams, Terry Eagleton, Edward Sayeed in World Literature, and has also translated the works of Mahasweta Devi and K. Satchidanandan from English to Hindi. Along with translations and cultural commentaries, Vyomesh has also been writing poems. He received the 'Ankur Mishra Memorial Award' in 2008 and the 'Bharat Bhushan Agrawal Memorial Award' in 2009 for poetry, 'Raza Foundation Fellowship' in 2011 for critical writing and 'Bharatiya Bhasha Parishad, Kolkata's Jan Kalyan Samman' for cultural work. Recently, he has been given the 'Ustad Bismillah Khan Yuva Puraskar' of the Kendriya Sangeet Natak Akademi for directing plays.

Vyomesh Shukla's two collections of poetry have been published in 2009 and 2020 by Rajkamal Prakashan, whose names are 'Phir Bhi Kuch Log' and 'Forgetting to Apply Kajal'. Along with this, a book of his focus on traditional and modern Indian art from the Lalit Kala Akademi, titled 'Kala Vichar', is published. Apart from this, he has edited a book focused on the personality and work of late Munmun Sarkar - 'Life dedicated to words' - a leading Bengali-Hindi translator. Recently, Vyomesh Shukla's book of critical essays 'Kathin Ka Akhadebaaz' has come from Rajkamal Prakashan.

The essays of Vyomesh Shukla have been published in leading newspapers, magazines, music and theatre journals of the country. The famous English newspaper 'Indian Express' has included him among the ten best writers of the country in one of its surveys, while the well-known weekly 'India Today' has given him a place among the thirty-five people who changed the socio-cultural landscape of India.

Vyomesh Shukla, living in Banaras, operates a theatre titled Rupvani and directs the plays of Rupvani. Vyomesh's plays have been staged at major art centres, festivals, festivals and occasions of the country more than one hundred and fifty times. Vyomesh has duly studied the Ramlila of Banaras and himself has played the role of Ram in the Ramlila of Banaras. Presenting the narratives of Ramayana and Mahabharata in new meanings and traditional crafts are central to his work.

Vyomesh has conceived and directed a play with about two hundred tribal artists of the same place, whose name is Bansin Kanya; On the other hand, the Prime Minister of India and the President of France have seen and appreciated together on the occasion of his visit to Varanasi, his dance drama 'Chitrakoot', which focused on various themes of Ramlila of Banaras. Vyomesh was involved since the beginning as an advisor to that cultural tour planned by the Union Ministry of Culture in March 2018. Apart from this, there are plays directed by Vyomesh – Kamayani, Shakti Puja of Rama, Rashmirathi, Pancharatram and Macbeth. Vyomesh has been involved in various schemes of the Ministry of Culture as an advisor. Presently, Vyomesh is the representative member of Uttar Pradesh in the General Assembly of Sangeet Natak Akademi - the country's highest organization working in the field of music, drama and dance.

व्योमेश शुक्ल 

कवि-आलोचक-अनुवादक-रंगनिर्देशक व्योमेश शुक्ल का जन्म 25 जून, 1980 को बनारस में हुआ. उनका बचपन यहीं बीता और यहीं पढ़ाई-लिखाई भी हुई. शहर के जीवन, अतीत, भूगोल और दिक्क़तों पर एकाग्र लेखों और प्रतिक्रियाओं के साथ 2004 में लिखने की शुरूआत. 2005 में व्योमेश ने ईराक़ पर हुई अमेरिकी ज़्यादतियों के बारे में मशहूर अमेरिकी पत्रकार इलियट वाइनबर्गर की किताब व्हाट आई हर्ड अबाउट ईराक़ का हिंदी अनुवाद किया, जिसे हिंदी की प्रतिष्ठित पत्रिका पहल ने एक पुस्तिका के तौर पर प्रकाशित किया. इस अनुवाद ने व्यापक लोकप्रियता और सराहना अर्जित की. 

व्योमेश ने विश्व-साहित्य से नॉम चोमस्की, हार्वर्ड ज़िन, रेमंड विलियम्स, टेरी इगल्टन, एडवर्ड सईद और भारतीय वांग्मय से महाश्वेता देवी और के. सच्चिदानंदन के लेखन का अंग्रेज़ी से हिंदी में अनुवाद किया है. अनुवाद और संस्कृति-संबंधी टिप्पणियों के साथ-साथ व्योमेश कविताएँ भी लिखते रहे हैं. कविताओं के लिए इन्हें 2008 में ‘अंकुर मिश्र स्मृति पुरस्कार’ और 2009 में ‘भारत भूषण अग्रवाल स्मृति सम्मान’, आलोचनात्मक लेखन के लिए 2011 में ‘रज़ा फाउंडेशन फ़ेलोशिप’ और संस्कृति-कर्म के लिए ‘भारतीय भाषा परिषद, कोलकाता का जनकल्याण सम्मान’ मिला है. हाल ही में नाटकों के निर्देशन के लिए इन्हें केन्द्रीय संगीत नाटक अकादेमी का ‘उस्ताद बिस्मिल्लाह खां युवा पुरस्कार’ दिया गया है. 

व्योमेश शुक्ल के दो कविता-संग्रह 2009 और 2020 में राजकमल प्रकाशन से छपे हैं, जिनके नाम हैं ‘फिर भी कुछ लोग’ और ‘काजल लगाना भूलना’. इसके साथ-साथ ललित कला अकादेमी से भी पारंपरिक और आधुनिक भारतीय कला पर एकाग्र उनकी एक किताब ‘कला विमर्श’ शीर्षक से प्रकाशित है. इसके अलावा अव्वलीन बांग्ला-हिंदी अनुवादिका - दिवंगत मुनमुन सरकार के व्यक्तित्व और कृतित्व पर केन्द्रित एक पुस्तक – ‘शब्दार्थ को समर्पित जीवन’ का इन्होंने संपादन किया है. हाल ही में व्योमेश शुक्ल के आलोचनात्मक निबंधों की किताब ‘कठिन का अखाड़ेबाज़’ राजकमल प्रकाशन से ही आयी है.

यों, व्योमेश शुक्ल के निबंध देश के अग्रणी समाचार-पत्रों, पत्रिकाओं, संगीत और थिएटर के जर्नल्स में प्रकाशित होते रहे हैं. मशहूर अंग्रेज़ी अख़बार ‘इंडियन एक्सप्रेस’ ने अपने एक सर्वेक्षण में उन्हें देश के दस श्रेष्ठ लेखकों में शामिल किया है तो जानेमाने साप्ताहिक ‘इंडिया टुडे’ ने उन्हें भारत के सामाजिक-सांस्कृतिक दृश्यालेख में परिवर्तन करने वाली पैंतीस शख्सियतों में जगह दी है. 

व्योमेश शुक्ल बनारस में रहकर रूपवाणी शीर्षक एक रंगमंडल का संचालन करते हैं और रूपवाणी के नाटकों का निर्देशन करते हैं. रूपवाणी के नाटक देश के प्रायः सभी महत्वपूर्ण समारोहों, उत्सवों और संस्थानों में खेले जाते हैं.  

व्योमेश के नाटकों के सवा सौ भी ज़्यादा मंचन देश के प्रमुख कला केन्द्रों, उत्सवों, समारोहों और अवसरों पर हुए हैं. व्योमेश ने बनारस की रामलीला का विधिवत अध्ययन किया है और स्वयं बनारस की रामलीला में राम की भूमिका की है. रामायण और महाभारत के आख्यानों को नये आशयों और पारंपरिक शिल्प में पेश करना उनके कामकाज की केंद्रीय वस्तु है. 

व्योमेश ने मध्यप्रदेश शासन के साथ बाँस की उत्पत्ति की एक पुराकथा पर एकाग्र एक नाटक वहीं के लगभग दो सौ आदिवासी कलाकारों के साथ परिकल्पित और निर्देशित किया है, जिसका नाम है बाँसिन कन्या; वहीं बनारस की रामलीला के विविध प्रसंगों पर एकाग्र उनके नृत्यनाटक ‘चित्रकूट’ को अपनी वाराणसी-यात्रा के अवसर पर भारत के प्रधानमंत्री और फ्रांस के राष्ट्रपति ने साथ-साथ देखा और सराहा है. केंद्र सरकार के संस्कृति मंत्रालय द्वारा मार्च 2018 में नियोजित उस सांस्कृतिक यात्रा के सलाहकार के तौर पर व्योमेश शुरुआत से ही उसमें शामिल थे. इसके अलावा व्योमेश द्वारा निर्देशित नाटक हैं – कामायनी, राम की शक्तिपूजा, रश्मिरथी, पंचरात्रम और मैकबेथ. व्योमेश संस्कृति मंत्रालय की अलग-अलग योजनाओं में बतौर सलाहकार शामिल रहे हैं. संप्रति, व्योमेश, संगीत, नाटक और नृत्य के क्षेत्र में काम करने वाली देश की सर्वोच्च संस्था – संगीत नाटक अकादेमी की महासभा में उत्तर प्रदेश के प्रतिनिधि सदस्य हैं.
