जन्म: 30 दिसम्बर, 1887, भड़ौच (गुजरात)।
शिक्षा: बी.ए., एल-एल.बी., डी.लिट्., एल-एल.डी.।
प्रारम्भ (1915) में ‘यंग इंडिया’ के संयुक्त संपादक, सन् 1938 से आजीवन, भारतीय विद्या भवन के अध्यक्ष और ‘भवन्स जर्नल’ के संपादक। सन् 1937-57 के दौरान दस वर्षों तक गुजराती साहित्य परिषद की अध्यक्षता की। सन् 1944 में हिंदी साहित्य सम्मेलन के अध्यक्ष। सन् 1951 से मृत्युपर्यंत वह संस्कृत विश्व परिषद के भी अध्यक्ष रहे। सन् 1952 से 1957 तक उत्तर प्रदेश के राज्यपाल का पद-भार सँभाला। उसी दौरान सन् 1957 में उन्होंने भारतीय इतिहास कांग्रेस की अध्यक्षता की।
