But the strong ties between the fathers have no meaning for their sons. Chand's son, Ram, runs away from his remote Himalayan village when he's just 11 years and comes to Delhi to seek his fame, fortune and destiny. At about the same time, Shujaat's son leaves their palace in Faridgarh after a major earthquake and relocates to Delhi. Extending across a period of more than seventy years and traversing through some of the most significant and turbulent events of India's historical past including the impact the independence movement and the emergency have on the life of the protagonists, this is a story of relationships - between fathers and sons, husbands and wives - that are torn apart by pride and long-standing resentments and supposed injustices. Above all, it is a story of friendships and bonds that stand the test of time and circumstance, crossing all social, cultural and religious barriers to prove that there's more to life than hate and enmity, power and money, business and politics, fear and violence.

आशुतोष गर्ग का जन्म 1973 में दिल्ली में हुआ. हिमाचल प्रदेश विश्वविद्यालय से एम.ए. (हिंदी) तथा दिल्ली स्नातकोत्तर डिप्लोमा (पत्रकारिता एवं अनुवाद) में प्राप्त करने के पश्चात् इंदिरा गाँधी मुक्ति विश्वविद्यालय से एम.बी.ए. (मानव संसाधन) की डिग्री प्राप्त की. स्कूल के दिनों से ही कविताएँ और कहानियाँ लिखने का सिलसिला आरंभ हो गया था और अब तक आपके द्वारा लिखी और अनुदित लगभग 15 किताबें प्रकाशित हो चुकी हैं.
आप अंग्रेज़ी और हिंदी दोनों भाषाओँ पर सामान रूप से अधिकार रखते हैं तथा अनुवाद के क्षेत्र में एक परिचित नाम हैं. 'दशराजन', 'द्रौपदी की महाभारत', 'आनंद का सरल मार्ग,' 'श्री हनुमान लीला' आदि हिंदी में आपके द्वारा किये गए प्रमुख अनुवाद हैं, जिन्हें काफ़ी सराहा गया है, आशुतोष नियमित रूप से समाचार-पत्र व पत्रिकाओं में लिखते हैं. वर्तमान में, रेल मंत्रालय में उप-निर्देशक के पद पर कार्यरत हैं.
