Synopsisआगामी अतीत का कथ्य रोमांटिक जरूर लग सकता है, परन्तु इसमें निहित रोमांटिकता के भीतर भी जो गहरी टीस व्याप्त है उसके संदर्भ खासतौर से सामाजिक-आर्थिक निर्भरताओं से जुड़े हुए हैं। यानी रिश्ते भी किस तरह मूर्छित हो जाते हैं या किस तरह का रूप मानसिक मजबूरियों की वजह से ले जाते हैं, इसीलिए इस उपन्यास में रोमांटिकता को रोमांटिकता से ही काटने का प्रयास दिखाई देता है। जब इस उपन्यास का धारावाहिक प्रकाशन हुआ था, तब इसके उद्देश्य को लेकर गहरी बहस भी सामने आई थी और अन्ततः पाठकों ने यह पाया था कि परम्परावादी रोमांटिक कहानियों से अलग यह उपन्यास एक नए कथ्य को सामने लाता है।
पूँजीवादी समाज के स्पर्द्धामूलक परिवेश की विडम्बना और अन्तर्विरोध ही इस उपन्यास का मुख्य कथ्य हैं। सन् 73-74 के आसपास लिखे गए इस उपन्यास की सार्थकता आज के भूमंडलीकरण के दौर में सामने आ चुकी है। आर्थिक आपाधापी के कारण टूट रहे स्त्री- पुरुष सम्बन्धों को इस उपन्यास में पहले ही हमारे सामने रख दिया गया था। और, उस नारी की पीड़ा को भी जो इस दौर की विकृतियों को सह रही है।

About the author
Kamleshwar was born in Mainpuri, Uttar Pradesh, in 1932. He did his master's in Hindi from Allahabad University in 1954 and soon afterwards started working as a scriptwriter for Doordarshan. In the course of a glorious career as a writer, he has written ten collections of short stories, ten novels and over thirty books in genres as diverse as literary criticism, travelogue and memoir. As a journalist he has been associated with the Dainik Jagaran (1990-92) and the Dainik Bhaskar (1996-2002) among other important assignments. In the electronic media he has been the additional director general of Doordarshan and has written TV serials like Darpan, Ek Kahani, Chandrakanta and Yug, apart from producing and directing various TV programmes and documentaries. He has also been a prolific scriptwriter in films with such acclaimed and popular films as Sara Aakash, Aandhi, Mausam, Rajanigandha, Choti Si Baat and Mr Natwarlal to his credit. He has been the recipient of various awards including the Sahitya Akademi Award in 2003. He lives in Delhi.
